Frequent Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions related to the Smart String Box
The Hall Effect is named after Edwin Hall, who in 1879 discovered that a voltage potential develops across a current-carrying conductive plate when a magnetic field passes through the plate in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the plate. SSX Webdom uses Hall Effect sensors to measure current generated by strings, and they can measure up to 40 Amperes of DC current per channel.
In the event of a power outage, string boxes can continue to monitor the solar radiation or any other sensor connected to the analog inputs of Webdom SSX, which will be stored inside the solid state memory module of the datalogger. This is very useful to evaluate the energy losses due to power outages. In the case of a communications failure with the string boxes, the monitored data is stored in memory and can be recovered when communication is restored. Datalogger can store data up to 6 month, and firmware can be uploaded remotely.
5x status LED, 2 x PT100/1000 temperature sensors, 1x4-20mA analog input, 1x0-10V analog input, 4xdigital inputs, 4 x digital outputs, 1xRS485 Isolated Modbus-RTU port. Digital input/outputs can be used to control external security sensors, like door intrusion of the same combiner box.
Yes. If you do not have enough space to place two Webdom SSX modules inside the combiner box, they can be mounted one above the other, using separators. You can see an application note for 24 strings case, in the application notes area at the bottom of Webdom SSX product page.
It is very important to use a shielded communication cables (eg Li-2YCYv 2x2x0.5) to minimize electromagnetic interference. The shield must be properly connected to earth, only one of the two cable ends, to avoid the problem of grounding loops. The best communication cable has twisted pair conductors, tinned copper braid and Aluminium-Polyester foiled (eg. Sumlene® Pos-CY). Characteristic Impedance (Z0) of the cable should be 120 ohm. The data transmission rate helps minimize interference problems, that is, better work than 9.6kbps 115.2Kbps.
